The ingredients for these shots are super simple and below I have the recipe for making a single shot or a batch for your next party.
Here’s what you need:
Ingredients for a Batch of 6 Shots:
- 6 Ounces Pineapple Juice
- 6 Ounces Vanilla Vodka

For a Single Shot:
- 1 Ounce Pineapple Juice

- ⅙ Ounce Grenadine
- 1 Maraschino Cherry, optional garnish
Items Needed:
- Jigger
- Cocktail Spoon

If you don’t have a cocktail spoon, simply tilt each shot to the side to slowly and gently pour the grenadine down the side.
Wait about 2 minutes for the grenadine to settle a bit.
How To Make Pineapple Upside-Down Cake Shots
These easy-to-make shots can be whipped up in mere minutes!
Prepare Your Glasses:
Chill your shot glasses in the freezer for about 10 minutes before preparing the shots to ensure they are nice and cold.
Mix the Drink:
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
Pour in the vanilla vodka and pineapple juice.
Shake well until the mixture is chilled.
Pour the Shots:
Strain the mixture from the shaker into the chilled shot glasses, filling each glass about 3/4 full.
Add the Grenadine:
Carefully add a splash of grenadine to each shot glass.
The grenadine will sink to the bottom, creating a beautiful layered effect reminiscent of a pineapple upside-down cake.
Garnish:
Top each shot with a maraschino cherry.
If desired, add a small pineapple chunk on the rim of each glass for an extra tropical touch.
Tips for the Perfect Pineapple Upside-Down Cake Shots:
- Make in advance: I wouldn’t recommend adding in the grenadine until you’re ready to serve. This will just make them look red without the two separate lines of color in each shot.
- You can mix the vodka and juice and simply store in an airtight container, in the fridge, for up to 4 days. Add the grenadine to each shot when ready to serve.
- Chill your vodka, juice and glasses. I tend to already have the vodka and juice chilled so that they’re the perfect temperature when poured.
- Layering the Grenadine: Pour the grenadine slowly to achieve the best layered effect. You can use the back of a spoon to help control the pour.
- Garnish Ideas: For an added visual and flavor appeal, consider rimming the shot glasses with sugar before pouring in the mixture.
- Make it a Mocktail: Substitute the vanilla vodka with vanilla-flavored soda or pineapple juice for a non-alcoholic version that everyone can enjoy.
