You probably haven’t thought about drinking a pumpkin spice cocktail but this pumpkin old fashioned is surprisingly tasty and perfect for a cold fall evening.
If you love fall as much as I do, the thought of having a signature pumpkin spice cocktail to drink at Thanksgiving or Halloween probably fills you with joy!
I created this fall cocktail with the idea of using pumpkin spice rather than a pumpkin flavored liquor.
I decided to do this mainly because it is easier for everyone to get their hands on the spice (plus it is much cheaper than buying a special bottle of pumpkin-flavored vodka or whatever).
This cocktail is comforting, warming and perfect for fall! Read on for the recipe and all the details.

What is this Pumpkin Spice Cocktail made of?
This pumpkin old fashioned is basically a blend of al the flavors of fall. It is like a glass of comfort and joy that you and your guests will love to sip by the fire.
To make it, you will need:
- 2 ounces Whiskey (I used 40 Creek Whiskey which is a local to me whiskey from Ontario).
- 1 oz maple syrup
- 1/4 teaspoon pumpkin spice
- 2 dashes of bitters
- a cinnamon stick (optional)
- Orange slices for garnish
What Exactly is Pumpkin Spice?
Pumpkin spice is also known as pumpkin pie spice.
It is a blend of spices that are used to make pumpkin pie. I use the Clubhouse brand in my cocktails and according to the ingredients, pumpkin pie spice consists of: cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice and cloves.
You can find it in the spice aisle of your local grocery store (it does sell out in the fall so buy early).
What Can You Use Instead Of Pumpkin Pie Spice?
If you can’t find pumpkin pie spice in your local store, you can make your own blend using 1:1 of the spices listed above.
You could also use pumpkin spice syrup but you will likely want to reduce your maple syrup in that case to avoid your drink being too sweet.
What tools do I need to make the Pumpkin Spice Cocktail?
You really don’t need much in order to make this cocktail which makes it perfect for any party or large gathering when you want to whip them up in minutes.
The only tool you’ll need to make this cocktail:
- A cocktail shaker
- A strainer for pouring the drink without the ice.
I also used these cool triangle whiskey glasses for this cocktail.
Don’t have the tools you need?
If you don’t have a cocktail shaker, a large mason jar works just as well in a pinch.
Use the mason jar lid or a plate to strain the drink if you don’t own a strainer.
