What is a Green Hawaiian cocktail?

A Green Hawaiian cocktail is a classic tropical drink that is not as well known as some of the other popular cocktails like a Blue Lagoon or Sea Breeze .

Why you’ll love Green Hawaiian

The Green Hawaiian cocktail is one of the most popular drinks in summer for many reasons.

The beautiful green color against a clear glass makes you feel like you are drinking something tropical while sitting on a beach somewhere in Hawaii.

The green color means it can be easily made into a Halloween or St Patrick’s Day cocktail too.

This Malibu Rum cocktail recipe is:

  • Fruity
  • Beautiful
  • Summery
  • Easy to make
  • Impressive

What is in a Green Hawaiian?

Green Hawaiian

The ingredients you need are Malibu rum, Blue Curacao, and pineapple juice. It is made in a shaker with ice cubes.

To make the cocktail you need:

  • 2 ounces white rum (I used Malibu but you can use any white rum)
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice or lemon/lime soda
  • 1/4 ounce Blue Curacao
  • 5 ounce pineapple juice

What is Blue Curacao?

The green Hawaiian calls for Blue Curacao which is a  citrus flavored liqueur made with the dried peel of the bitter orange laraha, a citrus fruit, grown on the Dutch island of Curaçao.

Does Blue Curacao Contain Alcohol?

Traditional Blue Curacao does contain alcohol but you can buy non-alcoholic versions that will color your drink without getting you drunk.

The most common non-alcoholic Blue Curacao is the Torani Blue Curacao Syrup.

What Can You Substitute for Blue Curacao?

If you want the alcoholic content but don’t have any Blue Curacao, you can use a citrus liqueur such as Triple Sec and add a few drops of blue food coloring to your drink.

Another option and one that I use often for the Green Hawaiian is to substitute the Blue Curacao for  a liqueur called Sour Puss.

What tools do I need to make a Green Hawaiian?

You really don’t need much in order to make this easy cocktail.

The only tools you’ll need to make this cocktail:

Variations On The Green Hawaiian Cocktail

There are a couple of other cocktails that you can make that are very similar to the Green Hawaiian.

 The Blue Hawaiian

The Blue Hawaiian is a drink that can be made by adding more Blue Curacao to the Green Hawaiian cocktail until the cocktail turns blue.

You can also omit the lime juice.

The same steps are taken as when making the original recipe.

This drink adds a cool and refreshing taste to the traditional Green Hawaiian cocktail.

The Red White & Blue

The Red White & Blue is a variation of this popular tropical summer drink that is made by adding cranberry juice (clear or red) to the original recipe for the Green Hawaiian cocktail.

This can be done using equal parts or 50% of each.

A little bit of grenadine syrup can also be added, which will give it a beautiful pink color.
