What is a Mojito?
A Mojito is a delicious drink that is made with rum, lime juice, sugar, and mint.
It is usually served cold, and it is a popular drink to enjoy during the summertime.
The mojito originated in Cuba but is popular all over the world.

Easy Watermelon Mojito Recipe: Ingredients
A few months ago I created a great Watermelon Vodka Mojito which used watermelon flavored vodka as the main ingredient.
Although that mojito is definitely delicious, I did want to make a version with rum too, as after all, rum is the more common alcohol to include in mojitos.
I’m also about to head on vacation to Cuba in a few weeks so I wanted to get in the mood with some tasty mojito cocktails and this seemed like the obvious one to start with.
Here are the Watermelon Mint Mojito ingredients you’ll need:
Mint
The mint adds a refreshing flavor to the drink and helps to cool you down on a hot day.
Watermelon
Fresh watermelon is a refreshing fruit that is perfect for cocktails.
It adds sweetness and flavor to the drink, and helps to cool you down on a hot day.
Watermelon typically has a sweet and juicy taste that is perfect for summer drinks.
If you are in a pinch, you can use frozen watermelon if you local store has is.
In Canada, it is available in the PC brand of stores.
Rum
One of the reasons that rum is often added to this cocktail is because it pairs well with sweet fruits like watermelon.
It adds a bit of sweetness and flavor to the drink, and helps to offset the tartness of the lime juice.
Plus, it makes the cocktail taste even more refreshing on a hot day!
Lime Juice
The citrus in the lime juice helps to add flavor and tartness to the drink.
It also helps to balance out the sweetness of the watermelon, and it makes the drink more refreshing on a hot day.
Agave
The agave nectar helps to sweeten the drink and gives it a more mellow flavor.
It helps to balance out the tartness of the lime juice.
If you don’t have agave, feel free to add a equal amount of simple syrup
Club Soda
Club soda is often added to cocktails because it helps to add carbonation.
It also helps to lighten up the drink and make it more refreshing.
If you don’t have club soda, feel free to use sparkling water instead.
Ice
Adding ice to a mojito helps to keep it cold.
It also helps to dilute the drink a bit, which makes it more refreshing and easier to sip on.
Any ice works for this drink but I prefer ice cubes or crushed ice.
This recipe makes one drink but you can double or triple the ingredients to make them in batches
As for tools, you don’t need much in the way of bartending equipment to make this drink:
Cocktail Shaker
If you don’t have a muddler, you can get by with the wrong end of a wooden spoon but a muddler does make things much easier and they are pretty inexpensive.
Easy Watermelon Mojito Recipe Directions
In a cocktail shaker add watermelon and muddle until you have released the juice (about 20-20 seconds).
Next bruise the mint to release the oils (you can bruise them in your hand, or muddle them in the cocktail shaker
Add the lime juice, rum and agave nectar into the cocktail shaker, and shake vigorously for 20 seconds
In a highball glass add the ice
From the cocktail shaker, strain and pour the mixture into the highball glass
Top with club soda, add your garnish and a straw and enjoy!
Watermelon Mint Mojito FAQS
I don’t have fresh mint on hand, can I use dried mint?
Mint is basically the key ingredient in a mojito.
Fun fact, the first time I went to Cuba on vacation, the hotel couldn’t/wouldn’t serve mojitos because they had run out of mint.
If you don’t have fresh mint on hand, I would recommend omitting mint completely or swapping it out for an alternative fresh herb.
If you really want a mint flavor, you can use dried mint in a Watermelon Mint Mojito, but I find that it doesn’t release as much flavor as fresh mint does.
I would start with about ½ the amount of dried mint called for in the recipe.
You may also want to muddle it for a bit longer to help release more of the flavor.
As an aside, mint is wonderfully easy to grow at home and is essentially a weed that grows very fast.
I keep some on my patio for all mojito emergencies.
Can I make this drink without rum?
Yes! This Watermelon Mint Mojito can be made without rum.
I’ve already mentioned my watermelon vodka mojito which is a great alternative.
Another option is to use gin.
Here is a recipe for a gin mojito.
You can add the watermelon to it.
Is this a kid-friendly drink?
Rum makes this a adults only beverage but you can make a non alcoholic version by omitting the rum completely.
Can I make a mojito with any type of fruit?
Yes! You can make a mojito with any type of fruit.
Watermelon is a great option for summer, but many fruits, especially berries, go really well in a mojito.

Can you make this ahead of time?
This Watermelon Mint Mojito can be made ahead of time, but I would recommend not adding the club soda and mint until you’re ready to drink it.
If you add the club soda too early, it will lose its carbonation.
If you add the mint too early, you will notice the bruised mint will darken and does not look as visually appealing (it will still taste just as good).
To make this watermelon mint mojito for a large crowd, I would suggest adding the fruit, lime juice, rum and agave into the bottom of a pitcher.
When you are ready to serve add the muddled mint, ice and club soda.
By doing so it will save you time and allow you to spend time with your guests
